CARING
FOR YOUR TREE
When you buy a fresh tree, you want to keep
it fresh by supplying it with water. Trees are thirsty -- please make sure
you check the water supply daily and add fresh water as needed. The
National Christmas Tree Association recommends that if you do not plan to
decorate your tree immediately upon arrival at your home, please keep it
outdoors, protected from the wind and sun, and keep the trunk in water. It
is important to make a straight cut across the trunk about one inch above the
original cut so the tree stem is opened up and the tree can take in water.
Place the trunk end of the tree immediately into fresh water (some people
recommend using warm water). Keep the water level constant or you will
need to make another cut to break the seal that naturally develops after the
water level falls away. Your tree cannot take in any water if the seal
forms. Bring the tree into a partially heated area the night before you
decorate (keeping the trunk in water) so it may adjust to the warmer
temperatures of your house.
Further, to ensure a safe and happy holiday,
place your tree away from fireplaces, radiators or other heat sources.
Never use lighted candles on your tree and do not use lights that show wear or
have frayed cords. Unplug the lights before you go to bed or leave home.
